When using smartphone or internet to connect with a therapist, it is important to be aware of who else might have access to your computer or phone. Technology-Assisted Psychotherapy can be convenient and effective, but there are added risks to confidentiality depending on the security of telephone, messaging, email, or video-conferencing. There are risks in transmitting information over the internet, including a breach of confidentiality, theft of personal information, and disruption of service due to technical difficulties. From the clinic’s perspective, we will keep all information confidential. However, telecommunication companies may keep records of phone calls, text messages, and other forms of communication. Please be cautious in the information you share with others.

Because of the added risks to confidentiality during our first telephone call, we will need to conduct a brief telephone checklist to ensure privacy of your sessions.

  • During telephone calls or video-conferencing sessions, please use a private space where no one will interrupt or overhear our conversation.

  • If your session is disrupted, please wait for a return phone call from your therapist, and if necessary you can contact our clinic at (216) 368-0719 to leave a message or schedule a follow-up session. Also, please provide the name and phone number for a family member or close friend, just in case some emergency arises.

Please allow 4-7 business days before our staff can respond to any voice message you may leave for our staff. If that delay feels excessive, please be sure to contact another emergency resource, even if it means calling 911 for emergency assistance.
