Meet Michael King, recipient of the Douglas K Detterman Award for Commitment to Scholarship in the Fields of Intelligence and Cognitive Ability

What is your research focus?
My research centers around the cognitive and perceptual factors that influence human performance, such as memory, attention, and learning. My current research is focused on visual search, and how attentional demands affect working memory capacity during search.

What are your goals for after grad school?
After grad school I plan on applying my knowledge and skill-set to research user-experience and behavior in an applied setting.

Can you tell me more about the award you received and the work that led to you receiving it?
The award I received is the Douglas Detterman Award for Commitment to Scholarship in the Fields of Intelligence and Cognitive Ability. This was awarded to me because of my research in intelligence, namely a meta-analysis on the genetic influence of spatial reasoning ability I published in Intelligence along with Dr. Brooke Macnamara, Dr. Lee Thompson, and Dr. David Katz. I also received this award due to my research on cognitive abilities, namely my research on the capacity of visual working memory during visual search. Part of this research is currently under review at Nature: Scientific Reports.
