Dr. Brown completed his doctoral training in clinical psychology and formal trauma specialization at the University of Missouri–St. Louis, followed by a predoctoral internship in the traumatic stress rotation at the Medical University of South Carolina and a postdoctoral fellowship in clinical psychology at the Traumatic Stress Center at Summa Health System in Akron, Ohio. Prior to joining the faculty at Case Western Reserve University, he was an Associate Professor of Clinical Psychology at Pennsylvania State University, The Behrend College. He is a licensed clinical psychologist in Pennsylvania with expertise in the assessment and treatment of traumatic stress disorders across the lifespan. Dr. Brown is trained in Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT), Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT), and Prolonged Exposure (PE).

Dr. Brown’s program of research focuses on enhancing the reach and effectiveness of trauma-focused interventions in community-based settings, particularly for underserved and marginalized populations, such as individuals diagnosed with severe mental illness (SMI). His work is driven by two primary aims: (1) translating findings from mixed-method research into the development, refinement, and standardized evaluation of trauma-informed care models and evidence-based interventions, and (2) investigating the role of transdiagnostic constructs, such as sleep disturbance and negative affect, within the context of trauma exposure and posttraumatic sequelae, including comorbid psychological disorders.

He was among the first to examine the implementation of PE for PTSD in Veterans with SMI with ongoing efforts to extend this work to community populations living with SMI who have limited access to trauma-focused services. Dr. Brown’s clinical and research efforts are strengthened by his training as a Community-Engaged Research Core Fellow through the Clinical and Translational Science Institute at Pennsylvania State University. His contributions have been recognized by the Early Career Award from APA Division 56 (Trauma Psychology).
