The Speech and Auditory Research (SpAR) Lab is conducting a speech recognition experiment this summer to examine how Spanish-English bilingual adults from Mexican descent understand speech in the presence of noise. Specifically, we are investigating how language dominance influences speech recognition in the presence of speech-shaped noise among Spanish-English bilingual Mexican adults. We are also comparing their performance to that of monolingual English-speaking adults.
We are currently recruiting the following participants:
Monolingual English Speakers of American English
Recruiting 20-30 people
Ages 18-30
Normal hearing
Participants will answer questions about their language background, complete a hearing screening, and participate in an English speech recognition test where they will listen to speech and repeat back what they hear.
Mexican Spanish-English Bilingual Speakers
Recruiting 20-30 people
Ages 18-30
Normal hearing
Participants must be from México or of Mexican descent
Participants will answer questions about their language background, complete a hearing screening, and participate in speech recognition tests in both English and Spanish where they will listen to speech and repeat back what they hear.
