In compliance with the Ohio Department of Higher Education (ODHE) Review of Ph.D. Programs, below are the goals and objectives for the Developmental, Cognitive, and Affective Sciences Program.
Mission of the Developmental, Cognitive, and Affective Sciences program:
The Mission of the Developmental, Cognitive, and Affective Sciences program is to prepare students for a career in research and teaching. Our program prides itself on ensuring that students are effective and engaging teachers, excel at designing complex, empirically driven research studies using a variety of methodological approaches, and are poised to contribute in unique ways to the field of psychology. Through strong training in the theories and methods of developmental, cognitive, affective, and behavioral psychology, our programs ultimate mission is to prepare students for a successful career.
Admission Standards
Each year, when the Core Faculty review applications, we examine the following materials: GRE scores, undergraduate degree and GPA, experience in research, letters of recommendation, and statement of purpose. CWRU does not discriminate based on age, race, gender, disability, or sexual orientation. We believe that much of psychology is dependent upon strong verbal and quantitative skills to guide both the academic writing, the spoken dialogue that underlies psychology research, and classroom instruction. Therefore, strong proficiency in the English language is expected of all applicants. The university requires the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) in cases where English is a second language for the applicant.
The admissions process involves several steps. First, the program faculty review all submitted application materials. At a faculty meeting, the applications are discussed, and the top candidates are contacted by interested mentors. The precise numbers of applicants admitted in any academic year is largely dependent on available funding. The hope is that the top two or three applicants will be offered admission into the program, with acceptance in large part dictated by a mentorship model. The applicant’s advisor is determined during the admissions process taking into account candidates’ skills and research interests. We strive to ensure a strong match between the applicant and at least one member of the program faculty.
Manner in which the program addresses the needs of the state
Research competency is demonstrated through successful framing of a research question, designing scientifically rigorous studies which include reliable and valid measures, successful identification and recruitment of study populations, accurate assessment approaches, statistical analysis and interpretation, and finally , successful dissemination of research findings in public forums (i.e. publications and presentations).
Placement objectives for graduates
Placement objects are in large part determined based on the individual needs of students. Our goal is to help our students achieve their own career goals. Our training is oriented specifically to preparation for an academic career involving both research and teaching.
The last program review was in 2015-2016 and was completed and approved on May 3, 2017.
